Seafront Development Approved Despite Resident Objections

The controversial plans for the redevelopment of The Terraces on Brighton's seafront have been approved.  Councilors granted planning permission at the committee meeting yesterday, 9th December.  Seven current units will be replaced by two large, modern buildings, housing eateries and the private members' club, Soho House.

The new buildings will be higher than the sea wall by between two and four metres for a distance of 100m, with a 10m gap.  This raised height is what prompted concern for residents, some of whom spoke in the debate at the committee meeting, pointing out that views would be lost.  Legends Brighton is one of the hotels that we know are concerned about the loss of views, and they had previously pointed out that many affected venues are LGBT.

Karen Barford and Daniel Chapman, local ward councillors, sent formal letters of rejection after hearing from worried residents.  Those in favour argued the current units are dated and the development would improve the landscape, and regenerate a neglected area.  The debates resulted in a seven-four majority of the committee approving the development, on the basis that the 10m gap between the two buildings is maintained.

It was argued that the images representing the potential view loss are misleading and inflated but with no other images presented, this remains to be seen. Brighton Views, which argued against the development posted this message on Twitter after the meeting.
